Jesus Christ, during His earthly ministry, often admonished His followers and warned the church of the danger of straying from the holy, eternal, inerrant written Word of God and delving, instead, into myths, legends and extra-Biblical revelation. An example of this is Mark 7:8, where Jesus rebukes the Pharisees, "Neglecting the commandment of God, you hold to the tradition of men." Again, in Mark 12:24, “Jesus said to them, ‘Is this not the reason you are mistaken, that you do not understand the Scriptures or the power of God?’” To know God, to know His revelation, is to know accurately what is taught in Holy Scriptures. This theme is continued by God the Holy Spirit in 1 Timothy 4:7 “But have nothing to do with worldly fables fit only for old women. On the other hand, discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness;” and, again, in 1 Timothy 1:4 “nor to pay attention to myths and endless genealogies, which give rise to mere speculation rather than furthering the administration of God which is by faith.”
Each week will be posted a series of True and False questions, with the answers appearing below. The object of these questions is for you to test yourself--not a test of obscure Bible trivia but a test of whether you are holding to Biblical revelation or myths and legends passed down by ignorant men. You should ask yourself, “If I have believed this myth, what other myths do I believe?” The goal is that you will be challenged to faithfully read and study the holy Scriptures and base your convictions on the holy, eternal, inerrant written Word of God.
True or False - According To The Bible....
Creation and the Fall of Man...
1. The Creation account follows the evolutionary model of events – if days are translated to ages, then the creation account and evolutionary models track each other and can be reconciled, one to the other.
False: The creation account follows this order: Day One: The creation of heaven, earth and light and its separation into day and night (Genesis 1:3 – 5) Day Two: The “expanse” which separated the waters and formed a heaven or space above the earth (Genesis 1:6 – 8) Day Three: The earth, the seas and vegetation (Genesis 1:9 – 13) Day Four: Sun, moon, stars, the rotation of these (Genesis 1:14-19) Day Five: Birds and swarms of living creatures in the seas (Genesis 1:20 – 23) Day Six: Animals and man – then at a later date woman (Genesis 1:24 – 31) Day Seven: God rests from His labors (Genesis 2:1 – 3) As you can see, there are a number of problems with the evolutionary model. First, light was created before the sun, moon and stars. Then the sun, moon and stars were all created simultaneously and visible from earth. Birds, fish, microbes in the sea and the largest of all the sea dwellers were created at the same time. Next, man and animals were created simultaneously and the animals were created in their present state. Another big problem is that man existed apart from woman. Her creation came later. Last but not least, almost all of Biblical doctrine concerning sin and the salvation we experience through Christ is tied to a single, historical Adam, the only man on the face of the earth. (Matthew 1:23 & 38; Romans 5:14 – 19; I Corinthians 15:21 & 22 & 45; I Timothy 2:13 & 14; Jude 1:14 & 15)Irrespective of the interpretation of "day" as 24 hours or of an indeterminate age, the evolutionary model cannot be reconciled to holy Scriptures. A Christian who holds to the inspiration of the Bible and salvation through Christ must reject the evolutionary model of existence in general and life on earth in particular.
2. The first sin was committed by Adam.
False – See answer # 3
3. The first sin was committed by Eve.
False – The first sin was committed by satan. Then 1/3 of the angels sinned in following satan. (Isiah 14:12 – 15; Revelation 12:1 – 9) Later satan tempted Adam and Eve. Eve sinned first and then Adam. (Genesis 3:1 – 6) However Eve, being deceived is not held accountable for the fall of all creation. Adam is held responsible. (I Timothy 2:14; Genesis 3:17 – 19; Romans 5:15 – 19) It is wrong to say, “If Eve had not sinned we would not have all these problems. It is Adam’s sin that brought a curse on mankind. Thus, the timeline of sin was satan, 1/3 of the angels, Eve and then Adam.
4. The forbidden fruit that Adam ate was an apple.
False – The forbidden fruit was the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil and the fruit of The Tree of Eternal Life. (Genesis 2:17 & 22)
5. The sins of Adam and Eve had nothing to do with nakedness, sensuality nor sexual intimacy.
True – The sins of Adam and Eve had to do with disobedience and rebellion to God. There is nothing inherently sinful concerning nakedness, sensuality and sexual intimacy between a husband a wife. (Genesis 1:27 & 28; 2:24 & 25; Proverbs 5:18 & 19)
