“He that soweth iniquity shall reap vanity: and the rod of his anger shall fail.” Proverbs 22:8

Why is this verse true? Why can we have confidence that evil intentions are assured of ultimate failure? There really is only one answer to these questions. The God of heaven reigns in righteousness. When faced with the problems of current, pressing workers of iniquity, it is easy to question the truth of this verse. It is easy to conclude things like “it has never been this bad,” or “evil has never had this much momentum or power.” The crisis of faith creeps in because today is too small of a sample size. When one looks at the larger picture, the whole of human history, the conclusion changes. Whether the discussion is the tower of Babel, the wickedness of Noah’s day, the fury of Pharoah, or the momentum of Hitler, we find that the rod of anger always fails. It is better to look at Jesus. In a time of great darkness, through the tender mercy of God, the Dayspring from on high visited this earth, to bring light, guidance, and to work righteousness. The sower of iniquity will come to vanity because God is a righteous God. It is also important to recognize this truth on a personal level. Sometimes, we become deeply entrenched in sin and hope that we can avoid painful consequences. This too shall fail. We either reap vanity, or we reap righteousness.
