BLOG ON: SERMON Temptation - Slave to Desire
GraceUnlimited
Dr. Joshua Mack
When you are ravenous, feeling you are dying from starvation and thirst, food and water become the only things you can think about. Jesus walks in the desert for forty days and becomes overwhelmingly hungry. You may not understand the temptation to turn stones into bread, but you can understand the desire to eat when you are very hungry. It was God's purpose for Jesus to be tested in this. Would he use his miraculous power to take a good thing and make it the main thing? The temptation was to make his own desire more important than the will of God. Satan just had to get Adam and Eve to doubt God, and he would easily tempt them to do anything else; even an act that would doom the entire human race. Moreover, for Jesus to make bread out of stones was not wise. You can have everything you want and still die empty. Jesus' trust in his Father's love could not be shaken. Therefore, the good desire didn't become a controlling factor for him. He trusted His Father in spite of the way things seemed. If you get everything you want, but your relationship with God is smashed, you are getting nothing.
