Speaking of the threat and of the hatred of Satan, Herman Witsius writes:
Whoever has God for his friend will find Satan to be his enemy…that wicked enemy is so inveterately opposed to the Divine majesty that he would gladly if it were possible, overturn the throne of God. As he utterly despairs of accomplishing that object, he throws out all his venom against the elect, employs every expedient, and exhausts all his devices to enslave those whom the power of God has torn from his grasp…”
Witsius goes on to note that when we prayer that our heavenly Father would not lead us into temptation
We express the hatred which we bear to sin, and our anxious desire and careful watchfulness, that we may not fall into its snares…We acknowledge our weakness, which will be easily overcome by so powerful a host of enemies…We pray that he may not permit us to meet with those temptations which we are unable to overcome; that in any temptation
