On this last day of 2014, it is wise to stop and consider the direction of our lives. In what ways has God shown Himself faithful this year? In what specific areas am I more like Christ today? And in what areas am I stubbornly resisting God? This is the contrast Solomon presents in this verse. One individual is obstinate, stubbornly pursuing his course despite any and all rebuke, prick of conscience, or word from God. Meanwhile, the upright experiences the blessing of having his way wisely directed. In a word, the contrast is humility. This is a problem because the obstinate do not usually consider themselves arrogant. So how does one become more humble? The simplest, best answer is this: By seeing and hearing God. This coming year, we all will either be more hardened in foolishness or led by wisdom. And the result will directly correlate to how much and how well we see God. I’m not talking about a mystical revelation. God reveals Himself through His word. So, commit to His word this year. And commit to asking Him to reveal His glory and His direction through His word.
