With all the sickness going around, there are some things we can do to avoid getting sick. Most know about hand-washing and avoiding touching the eyes, nose & mouth with unwashed hands. As important is maintaining a healthy immune system, which can keep you well even when exposed to bad germs. About 70% of your immune system is in your gut, which is largely based on having enough “good” bacteria. Eating food like yogurt or taking probiotics will help, especially after completing a round of antibiotics. Vitamin D is important for your immune system. We can’t get enough from the sun this time of year, so we need at least some supplementation. Getting enough sleep is also important. I am most likely to get sick after a significant loss of sleep.
How about your spiritual health? I believe the spiritual world often mirrors the physical world to help us understand spiritual truth. Some of the same people who avoid contamination by germs expose themselves to moral filth. Our culture is post-Christian and is increasingly corrupt in beliefs & practices. 2 Cor. 6:17-7:1 says, “Therefore ‘Come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean… Therefore, … let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.” We cannot avoid all contact with the temptations of this world, so we need a healthy spiritual immune system. Feed on good spiritual food each day, the Word of God. Get your spiritual vitamin D by exposing your soul to the Son of Righteousness (Mal. 4:2). Rest in the Lord by trusting in Him (Heb. 4:9-11; Php. 4:6-7).
