WORSHIP CHRIST THE LORD Tune to "O Little Town of Bethlehem" Words by Jim Byrd
1. Sing praises to the Son of God, Who down from heaven came; To save His people from their guilt, From misery and shame. Down from His heav’nly glory The Savior came to earth; And angels looked with holy awe, Upon Messiah’s birth.
2. God in the flesh, the Son of Man, Our Prophet, Priest and King; The Seed of woman came to earth, To save the perishing. In love and great compassion, The great Redeemer died; He reconciled us to our God And we are justified.
3. Christ was the perfect sacrifice, Our sins upon Him lay; The sword of justice pierced His heart, And guilt was washed away. O’er sin and death He triumphed, His greatness let us own; The Savior reigns forevermore, Upon His sovereign throne.
4. Bow down and worship Christ the Lord, His wonders gladly tell; All fulness of the Godhead three, In Christ the Savior dwell. The only Mediator, On Him our hopes depend; He is our Savior, God and King, Our Advocate and Friend.
SCRIPTURE READING: Morning Worship: John 1:1-14 Evening Worship: Acts 9:23-29 ***** "But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth His Son, made of a woman, made under the law, to redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons."(Galatians 4:4-5) *****
THE GOD-MAN When the Son of God came into this world to be born of a virgin, live a life of obedience to the Father and then die and establish righteousness for His people by the sacrifice of Himself, He did not cease to be God. He took into union with Himself that which He did not have before, a human body and soul, but He did not stop being divine. Let it also be remembered that when He finished the work of redemption and ascended back to heaven, He did not cease being Man. He remains today and forevermore our glorious God and sympathizing High Priest, Savior and elder Brother. He is the God-Man. –Pastor Jim Byrd *****
"I beg the reader to remark the burden of the angelic message: ‘Glory to GOD in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men’ (Luke 2:14). Yes! the whole glory is GOD’S; because it is all founded in GOD; carried on in GOD; completed in GOD; and man is but the receiver of the mercies. Oh! that this was well understood by men! What an end would it put to all the pharisaical righteousness and pride of men!" –Robert Hawker *****
"THE WORD WAS MADE FLESH" (John 1:14) Dearest of all the names above, my Jesus and my God, Who can resist Thy heavenly love, or trifle with Thy blood?
‘Tis by the merits of Thy death the Father smiles again; ‘Tis by Thine interceding breath the Spirit dwells with men.
Till God in human flesh I see, my thoughts no comfort find; The holy, just and sacred Three, are terrors to my mind.
But if Immanuel’s face appear, my hope, my joy begins, His name dissolves my slavish fear, His grace removes my stain.
While Jews on their own law rely, and Greeks of wisdom boast; I love the Incarnate mystery, and there I fix my trust. –Isaac Watts, 1709 *****
GOOD NEWS FOR SINNERS "Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel" (Isaiah 7:14).
On this prophecy hangs the hopes of fallen sinners. Had this word failed, we were all damned forever. Eternal horror awaited us. Eternal hell must have been our doom. But, oh my fellow sinners, this day is this scripture fulfilled. It was for us sinners against God that Christ came, and so we read "Unto us a Child is born; unto us a Son is given" (Isaiah 9:6). He was born and given that we who are filthy by birth and polluted by nature might have a holy birth. "The government shall be upon His shoulders." He is our KING. He reigns over us, for us and in us. Our souls and all our concerns are safe in His hands. "His name is WONDERFUL." In His conception, His birth, His person, God and Man in one Christ, in His life, His death, His resurrection, ascension, and intercession, He is wonderful. "Counselor." He powerfully pleads our cause above. He sweetly counsels our hearts below to come to Him; so we find blessed rest in Him. "THE MIGHTY GOD." No less could save us. Jesus is the God of our salvation. "THE EVERLASTING FATHER." He begets us to Himself by the word of His grace. The most tender parent on earth never loved his children as Jesus loves me. "THE PRINCE OF PEACE." He is ever at peace with us, has made peace for us and bestows peace on us. –William Mason (edited for length)
