Then they said to Moses, “Is it because there were no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness? Why have you dealt with us in this way, bringing us out of Egypt? Is this not the word that we spoke to you in Egypt, saying, ‘Leave us alone that we may serve the Egyptians’? For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.” – Exodus 14:11-12
We are about to learn something about ourselves by the way these Jews are acting. How many Christians give their life to Christ, sign up for church membership, and then pastors begin to disciple and teach them what carrying a cross in this world means and many do the same thing as these Jews and say, “Wouldn’t it have been better just to stay in slavery back in the world? This is hard. This is a trial. I’m losing my friends. I’m ridiculed at work. I’m scoffed at and mocked. I’m left out at school. I eat alone in the lunchroom. Would it not have been better just to stay in the world?” That’s what the Israelites said.
But, there is an encouraging side to this. God still delivered them – even after all the lack of faith, the grumbling, the griping, the moaning, and the worldly faithlessness. So there is hope for you! There is hope for you, grumbler. There is hope for you, griper. There is hope for you, complainer. The pastor shows you what the word of God says and you cry, “Oh no, I don’t know about that.” Grow up! Be a man! Stand on something! Believe something! March for something! Make your life count for something! Anybody can go to Egypt and march lock-step to the dictates of the flesh and Satan, but it takes a man to walk with God in this world.
This Christianity thing is hard. It’s so easy in this day to find a play church, a modern church, a cool church, a fun church. You know what I have found? There aren't any men in those “churches” but there are plenty of mice! But, you know what else I have found? God can take weak mice and make mighty men out of them. I’m one of those. Not that I’m what I ought to be, but whatever strength I have, it’s from God.
