Speaking of Abram’s puzzlement in Genesis 15: 2, 3 Calvin notes that Abraham is thinking of God’s promise to be a shield and exceeding great reward to Abram. “That is why,” Calvin writes, “Abraham replies here, as if he were informing God: ‘And that promise cannot be fulfilled unless there are seed, and you have not given them to me. How will this finally end?’ In brief, we see that Abraham was not influenced by ambition…He considered how he would be able to enjoy God’s promise to be his exceeding great reward. That could not happen without the Redeemer who had been promised to him. So the discussion was about that promise by God. It is as if he were saying, ‘Lord, what is going on here? You promise to be my exceeding great reward, so I must adhere to you. You promise to be my reward; so I must assure myself of your protection. But who am I? And who are you? Your majesty is incomprehensible, and I am a poor worm of the earth, and how will I attain unto you? You must come down here.’ And in what way? That cannot happen…except in the person of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
