“An high look, and a proud heart, and the plowing of the wicked, is sin.” Proverbs 21:4
There is a common thread that runs through these seemingly disconnected sins, the illusion of self-sufficiency. The individual with a high look thinks that he is better than others because he has done so well in comparison to them. He has no real grasp of the mercies of God that have allowed him to function and achieve the accomplishments that he now uses as a platform in order to elevate himself above others. The proud heart is totally self-focused, and believes that others exist to serve him and fulfill his every desire. The idea of serving others or God is totally foreign to this individual; their focus is on using God and others for personal gain. The plowing of the wicked is the man who goes to work every day completely hardened to the fact that he is dependent on God for his sustenance and provisions. He plows as it were and expects that his reaping is in no way a result of anything but his own labors. The point of the passage is this; self-sufficiency is offensive to God, because self-sufficiency completely ignores God. May we search our hearts this morning and ask Jesus to cleanse us of the illusions of self-sufficiency that we currently harbor in our own hearts.
