The analogy Solomon makes to illustrate his point is not what one might expect. God controls the king’s heart just as He controls rivers of water. This doesn’t necessarily paint the calmest picture. On a cloudless, sunny day, we would expect tranquil waters. But after a torrential flood, rivers become unpredictable and scary. And I think this picture is exactly what Solomon wants us to see. Even when things seem random, unpredictable, and out of control, they are never as they appear. In the midst of confusion, look past the raging river, look past the angry king to see the One who is calm, assured, and in control. This is a faith passage. It is meant to draw our affection, our trust, and our awe towards God.
