Everyday Wisdom | Proverbs 20:24

"Man's goings are of the LORD; how can a man then understand his own way?" Proverbs 20:24

If God is sovereign, what good is wisdom? As Solomon compiles wisdom to pass down to his son and the next generations, he asks a very good question. The Bible clearly teaches that God is sovereignly doing what he wants to do when He wants to do it (Dan. 4:35; Eph.1:11). If this is so, why would we spend so much time and effort trying to learn and practice wisdom? To answer this question, we need an accurate understanding of what we are considering when we say “wisdom”. A very basic definition of wisdom is understanding. So, to have wisdom is to understand. The truth is we can’t understand anything if there isn’t a constant that we can depend on; something that will never change. God’s character is our constant, because He never changes. If this is the case, then the question is no longer “If God is sovereign, what good is wisdom?”, but “If God isn’t sovereign how is wisdom even possible?” We can have understanding because God has revealed to us His character and His laws. Wisdom is based on right thinking, which is given to us as God grants us His spirit and gives us His Word. It is tempting to fall into the mindset that wisdom is only a novelty in a world where God is sovereign, but this just means we haven’t thought through the issue hard enough. Praise God for His sovereignty and the possibility for wisdom that comes as a result of who He is.
