“APOSTASY”
“For if we sin willfully AFTER that we have received the KNOWLEDGE of the TRUTH,
there remaineth no more (atoning) sacrifice for sins.”
Hebrews 10:26

In context this statement comes after the author of Hebrews had warned against abandoning the assembly of believers. There is no doubt that there is an apostasy of the mind which takes place by degrees long before one publicly manifests himself to be an apostate by forsaking the assembly of Christ’s people. When the epistle was written there was an issue of sharp contrast. Their total abandonment of the Christian faith and a re-embracing of the Jews’ religion identified those Hebrews that were guilty of that particular “willful sin”. I think apostates today are much more subtle creatures. They embrace the doctrine of the true Gospel without the grace of repentance and the grace of faith being experienced in their hearts. Therefore when the claims of King Jesus are pressed upon them, in a subtle way they seek some superficial issue whereby they may abandon the assembly, and at the same time relieve themselves of the pressure and save face.
Call it what you will, those who “know the truth,” yet refuse to identify with those who have “forsaken all” for the truth’s sake, are true apostates and are guilty of the sin of deepest dye. Yes, much worse than murder, adultery, or theft, for the writer continues, “He that despised Moses Law (those commandments against such sins that I mentioned above) died without mercy under two or three witnesses: Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy,” (Hebrews 10:28-29). I think, justifiably, that the application follows, He who despises the Gospel by forsaking those who faithfully bear a good confession of it fall into this context.
William Gurnall said, “None sink so far into hell as those that come nearest heaven.” My friend, you come no nearer heaven in this world than in an assembly of true believers where the glory of Christ and His Gospel shines clearest and brightest, however wanting in number or dignity that assembly may be.
The New Testament scriptures issue very strong warnings to those who turn from the clear teachings of the Word of truth. I cite two references in particular, II Peter 2:21, “For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than, after they have known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.” And II Thessalonians 2:10-12, “And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.”
