II. Exegesis A. God’s Law is Know-able and Do-able. Vs. 11-14, Reference Romans 10 This Life is Do-able. See Verse 20 - That you Love the Lord your God. - Obey the Lord your God - Hold fast to the Lord your God. Faith!!!
B. Two paths… two alternatives. These paths are always there. Vs. 15-16 Path A -- The Good Life Path B -- The Evil Death.
Verse 16 elucidates. Path A -- Love God and Listen to Him and Obey Him. Path B -- Hate God and Don’t Listen to Him and Don’t Obey Him.
C. A Warning Against Turning Away - vs. 17-18 1. Refusing to Hear God’s Word and Obey it 2. A Look at the Record a. Innovative Worship -- Exod 32 b. They worship other gods. Judges 2:11 c. Innovation. Lev. 10, cf. Exod. 30:9 d. Pure covetousness. Josh. 7:18-21 e. The practical innovator - Saul - 1 Sam. 13:11 God’s commandments are ignored, except for where they conveniently fit into Saul’s overall scheme. 1) Sacrifice rather than obedience - 1 Sam. 15:22 2) God - relevant in worship, but not in life?
3. Application: a. Science is busy creating the Good Life, and ignoring God. Can you break God’s law in order to do good science? The assumption that every technological development is a good one, and that we are actually better off in the long run because of what is happening in micro-biology, or computer science, or atomic research. Trusting science explicitly is a dangerous thing… especially when more and more scientists refuse to acknowledge the fear of God.
b. Sometimes God’s Law is Inconvenient and Inefficient c. Sometimes God’s Law doesn’t Make Sense. Exodus 20, Leviticus 18-20 stands in the way of a lot of Science and Culture.
D. God’s Law is there for Our Blessing. Vs. 19-20 1. God tells us what is Good, and what is Right -what is the good life and what is the right way to get there. Exod. 22:23-24 - Children without fathers is a Bad Thing. Caring for the fatherless is a good thing to do. Prov. 22:7 - Debt is a Curse Isaiah 3:18 - Women leading is a Curse
2. God blesses the man that fears the Lord and delights in His commandments. Ps. 112:1-4
