"Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water; but a man of understanding will draw it out." Proverbs 20:5
Solomon speaks of the purposes and plans of the heart as being like deep waters. The illustration that is given is meant to convey the idea that we do not always have an accurate understanding of our own motives. One of the most difficult questions we can be faced with is the question of “Why?” Why did I just respond that way? Why do I have such a problem with this particular area or individual? We may all have surface answers as to why we think we do particular things, but it takes understanding to get an accurate diagnosis of the heart. The man of understanding that Solomon speaks of here is the man who has applied his heart to wisdom through learning and believing God’s Word. According to Hebrews 4:12, it is the Word of God that has the ability to discern the thoughts and intents of the heart. The picture Solomon paints, is not one of a man who is so complex in and of himself that it takes an expert to delve into the layers of his unconscious thought; but a man who is blinded by and to his own heart, who needs someone who understands the Bible well enough to ask pertinent questions that reveal sinful or godly motives and behaviors. The Spirit of God brings this about through the faithful application of His Word. May God bless us to seek this out in our own lives; and seek to provide this for others.
