This morning we continue our regular exposition of Christian doctrine and our series on the Ten Commandments—God’s abiding rule for our life. This morning we hear the ever timely Word of the Ninth Commandment. This concerns the sin of the tongue whereby men bear false witness, gossip, slander, and otherwise bite and devour the neighbor. Sadly, this sin is a great sin in the church. In my humble opinion, transgression of the ninth commandment destroys more fellowship, ruins more ministries, and does more to violate the peace of God among believers than any heresy ever did. Let us ever be on guard against the sin of hurtful and divisive speech. The psalmist calls it “the strife of tongues” (Psalm 31: 20). James calls the tongue a restless evil. Let us give this sin no place among us! Rather, let us speak the truth in love, out of the conviction that God has just one Word of us: Jesus Savior!
