"The sluggard will not plow by reason of the cold; therefore shall he beg in harvest, and have nothing." Proverbs 20:4

Being responsible is part of wise living. Yet, it is so easy to try and absolve ourselves of the responsibilities of which we are not particularly fond. It is not pleasant to work outside on a cold day. However, it is not godly to be lazy. There is a sense of entitlement that goes along with the attitude that says “I refuse to be inconvenienced today, even if it means I will inconvenience you tomorrow.” As recipients of grace, Christians should be gracious and charitable to others as opportunities arise. For those who are sincerely struggling, and are looking for opportunities to “plow”, it is right to humble yourself and allow God to provide for you through the generosity of others. However, for those who are able and yet address their laziness with one excuse after another; you are in need of conviction and repentance over the selfish, slothful, spirit of pride you have allowed to take root in your heart. This might seem kind of harsh, but it is consistent with the no work/no eat principle that Paul gives when he addresses the issue in 2 Thessalonians 3:10. In 1Timothy 5:8, Paul says that those who refuse to provide for their families are worse than unbelievers and have denied the faith. I do not think Paul was angry at those who were on the receiving end of these statements, but I do think he wanted them to know that repentance was in order. If you find that the verse above is describing you, then you should realize that repentance is in order for you as well.
