Everyday Wisdom | Proverbs 20:3

“It is an honor for a man to cease from strife: but every fool will be meddling.” Proverbs 20:3

This truth statement is at once counter-intuitive and obvious. What I mean by that comment is that when strife is viewed from the outside, it seems foolish. Children arguing over who gets to sit in the front seat, whose turn it is to lick the cookie mixer, etc. This strife is foolish and unnecessary, and anyone with good sense would agree. But when it comes to the things that aggravate my comfort, this verse loses its clarity. Honor is found in making my point, in clearing my name, in having my opinion heard. Walking away is equated with losing in this mindset. Why does this disconnect exist? Why can I see God’s wisdom in this verse in theory but reject it in practice? In a word, pride. The real emphasis here is the great need for grace, grace to apply in real time what my spirit affirms in the pew. Grace is found in seeking God diligently. Grace is found in real time when I have sought after God in prayer in the morning, meditated on His word through the day, and praised Him in all circumstances. Our greatest need today is not self-deluded honor; our greatest need is fellowship with God.
