“He that wasteth his father, and chaseth away his mother, is a son that causeth shame, and bringeth reproach.” Proverbs 19:26

As we approach a verse like this, we have to ask ourselves the question; how am I treating my parents? It’s easy for our minds to automatically go to rebellious teenagers and irresponsible adults who have taken advantage of their parents again and again. While the two previous examples surely fit within the realm of application, we must keep in mind that this verse is meant to instruct us personally, right where we are in life. So, with that being said; in what ways are you mistreating your father and driving away your mother. It is important to realize that this can happen both directly and indirectly. Every time we roll our eyes, ignore, or become cynical toward our parents, we violate this precept. As an adult, this is a very difficult balance to strike isn’t it? On the one hand, if you have left the nest, you have probably adopted some of your parent’s practices and preferences. On the other hand, some of their preferences aren’t yours and you have decided to take a different route. This can be a very delicate area, and must be managed with mercy. Another factor that can make this a difficult task is the fact that when young adults begin to try and establish their own preferences and a specific direction in life, it can be difficult for parents to not overwhelm them out of concern for their wellbeing. While some parents can be overbearing in this area, children must strive to be merciful toward the ones who have loved them and cared for them all of their lives. This can be tricky and difficult, but it can be done. God means for us to honor our mother’s and father’s, and there is sufficient grace for this in even the most difficult circumstances. As I write this, please do not think that I am saying parents are just a burden that we must bear. To the contrary, if you have parents who love you and care for you, they are one of the primary blessings you will receive on earth. As sinners, we must strive to keep our hearts in check, and respond with thankfulness, love and mercy; toward the ones who have put up with us and loved us every day of our lives.
