This passage is about the dangers of uncontrolled anger; you might refer to it as a quick temper. An individual who continuously gives themselves over to anger is an individual who will eventually suffer for their lack of self-control. In fact, even if an individual has connections that might be able to help him avoid legal or other consequences, they will eventually burn those bridges as well. Anger is usually produced as a reaction to our inability to control or manipulate an individual or situation. We want to be sovereign, yet our daily experiences continuously remind us that we are not. With that being said, we find that the root of anger is a lack of trust in God’s sovereignty. This may not make sense at first glance, but it is the root of many sinful responses to life. If I believe that things have to be exactly the way I want them, I also believe that God’s will is only good if it meets my standard. When my standard is broken, I really become angry at God; but it is easier for me to take my anger out on you. What is the solution for this? Behaviorally, the biblical solution is self-control. Inwardly, we must be motivated to pursue self-control as we look at the cross of Christ and embrace the truth of the gospel. 2 Corinthians 5:21 - For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
