THE MODERN "INVITATION" OR "ALTAR CALL"

THE MODERN “INVITATION”
OR “ALTAR CALL”

I have written several times in the past on the unscriptural and unfounded system of the modern day (“invitation”) “altar call”. I have challenged my readers to search the Scriptures and prove whether or not such “method” was the practice of the apostles of our Lord. The following statement is from a good friend who ministered the same church for over fifty years and has been involved in worldwide missions for the same length of time.
“The ‘invitation’ or ‘altar call’ at the end of a service has become such an accepted tradition in today’s religion that those who do not sing ‘an invitation hymn’ and invite people to the front of the church to ‘get saved’ are branded with all sorts of names and charges.
“It never seems to trouble religious people that this ‘altar call’ is nowhere to be found in God’s Word. The great majority of those who ‘come forward’ usually ‘go back’ into indifference and worldliness. Coming to Christ is not a physical move at all, but a heart commitment to the Redeemer. The Scripture presents BAPTISM as our public confession of Christ, not ‘shaking the preacher’s hand’. The gospel is a COMMAND to repent, believe, and follow the Lord in baptism, not a mere invitation. The King of kings does not invite His subjects to obey and believe Him—He commands them!”
The use of altars in Old Testament times by the Hebrews was in view of the cross and the atonement of Jesus Christ. The brazen altar was a type of the cross as were the animals, which were offered upon it. When the worshiper brought his victim to the tabernacle or temple to be offered he was looking forward to the once and for all sacrifice which would be fulfilled in the death of Christ.
All was fulfilled in the sacrifice of Christ, the Lamb of God. He took all the “handwriting of ordinances” (which were against us) away and nailed them to the cross, (Colossians 2:13-14). Therefore there are no more altars, Aaronic priesthood, sacrifice, temple or any such practice to be found in New Testament teaching.
The word altar, from the book of Acts forward, is found twelve times, beginning in Acts 17:23, where it is applied to the superstitious practice of the Greeks. In Hebrews 13:10 the writer says, “We have an altar”, literally “a table”, and in context he is speaking of Jesus Christ who fulfilled and did away with all Old Testament practice of such. Jesus Christ is my “Altar.” Is He yours?
