“Slothfulness casteth into a deep sleep; and in idle soul shall suffer hunger.” Proverbs 19:15
The notable point of this passage is the loss of awareness that results from slothfulness. Basic needs (hunger) that should be obvious are not perceived and go unaddressed as a result of not engaging our minds diligently to the tasks at hand. This principle is true for individuals, and it is also true in churches. In your church, what characterizes your activity – receiving or giving? A receiver may attend faithfully and give financially. But if there is no thought to observing and meeting the needs, material and spiritual, of others, then this person is a receiver only. Put another way, you are slothful. This slothfulness will result in obvious and basic needs going unmet. The end of slothfulness is severe deprivation and then death. Let me give two starting points for breaking the numbing hold of slothfulness. First, pray. Confess your slothfulness to God and ask Him to both open your eyes to needs and to break the selfishness of your heart. Second, schedule a visit with your pastor. Ask him to help direct you to active service in the house of God.
