" Ye are my brethren, ye are my bones and my flesh: wherefore then are ye the last to bring back the king ?" II Samuel 19:12
These are David's words to the tribe of Judah after Absalom's attempted revolt on the kingdom had failed. David, the good and rightful king, still had not been restored to his throne. Since he was of Judah, he appealed to them on the basis of their family union.
David's words, as a type of Christ, should ring deeply in the hearts of all who love Jesus. He claims us as His family, even as His bones and flesh. The Scriptures speak of God choosing us in Christ, of our life being hid in Christ, of our ultimate identity of being wrapped up in Christ . It speaks of marriage as a representation of Christ and His loved ones, a bond that is of the closest nature and completely unbreakable.
If this is true of us and Christ, then it goes without saying that our reaction to Him should not be that of Judah towards David. They were lax to acknowledge David again as king. Their affections didn't seem to be so warm towards Him as once before. Perhaps they were afraid of Him, since many of them had sided with Absalom.
How is it with you and Christ? Are you reticent to acknowledge Him as King and live under His rule? Is your heart dull towards Him? Are you afraid that since you haven't been in the past what you should have been, you can't now run to Him from the heart and be accepted? Believer, you are His bones and flesh. You are one with Him! Run to Him, rejoice in your identity in Him and obediently and loyally serve Him as King.
