Before we make any comments on this passage, I think the Bible in Basic English translation is worth reading – “Material comfort is not good for the foolish; much less for a servant to be put over rulers.” This passage could easily be proven by looking at the climate of our own culture. Why is it that material comfort or power is not good for foolish people? In order for these to be used in a God honoring way, it must be seen as a blessing from God that is to be used to further His kingdom. This means that there is not a preoccupation with seeing how much of the material comfort or power I can possibly soak up in a 24 hour period, but how can I use this to bless others, and how can I use it in a way that reflects God’s goodness in providing me with things that are meant to honor and reflect His character. The point in both scenarios of this verse is that stuff and power are not good for those who have no idea how to use it. Several years ago, a family member of mine was overseeing the construction of a section of government housing. I was amazed to see how nice these houses were that were going to be rented for somewhere in the neighborhood of $25-$50 a month. During a conversation that my family member had with one of the individuals who had lots of experience in these types of projects, he learned that the life expectancy of these brand new homes was 3-5 years before they would become completely trashed and in need of serious repair. I have to admit I was disgusted when I heard this prediction. However, I do not share that story to say everyone who lives in government housing is a fool or doesn’t take care of their things. I share it, because the sobering reality is many times, all we have to do is look at ourselves to see the same type of ungrateful and irresponsible attitude. The cure for this type of lifestyle is clearly spelled out in the Proverbs; get wisdom.
