“The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day.” Luke 9:22
Jesus spoke these words to His chosen disciples in private, giving them a “heads-up” of what the future held. Although their minds didn't full process it then, we living on this side of the Cross can learn much.
Note the lengths to which our Savior was willing to go to do the will of His Father and accomplish our salvation. He was God, yet cloaked in humanity. He was the Creator of the elders, chief priests and scribes, yet was willing to allow Himself to suffer the greatest of injustices at their hands.
He knew what He was going to face, and was still willing to go through with it. That is true commitment!
The next verse says, “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.” If we want to claim Christ, we must follow in His footsteps. Our daily sacrifices are not to take away sin, but to demonstrate our love and gratitude to Him for His sin-removing sacrifice. To follow Him means He is the center of things, not our sinful flesh. It means we have to die to ourselves, to sin, to whatever may hinder our service.
Christ's story didn't end with suffering, but victory in being raised the third day! Likewise, those who are in Christ have the guarantee of final victory in Him.
