"A man's belly shall be satisfied with the fruit of his mouth; and with the increase of his lips shall he be filled." Proverbs 18:20
At this point in Proverbs, we should be coming to the conclusion that God is concerned about the words that we choose to speak in everyday life. We are also seeing that our words have a powerful effect on our personal disposition. Many commentators say that the word “belly” in this passage is a reference to the conscience. The words that we choose will dictate weather our conscience is clear or heavy with guilt. The principle of reaping and sowing is really what Solomon is speaking of here. He is pointing us to the fact that we are affected, not just by the words of others, but by the words that proceed from our own hearts as well. Those who would be wise will keep a close watch over the words they choose to speak.
