“He that is first in his own cause seemeth just; but his neighbor cometh and searcheth him.” Proverbs 18:17
Solomon returns to a theme that he just covered four verses earlier. We can take this as a sure sign that this is a very important topic. We can call this theme first impressions or assumptions. At first glance, the one pleading his cause seems right. The problem is we only know one side of the story. How often has a rush to judgment hampered your ability to see clearly and caused great harm? Understand this: Wisdom is never found void of discernment. They go hand in hand. God calls you to wisdom, and God calls you to discernment. Discernment requires you to hear and understand both sides of a story. Discernment requires you to resist rash judgments. Discernment requires you to do the hard work of searching for truth. Wisdom, and usually peace, is the result of discernment.
