“And the king said, Thou shalt surely die, Ahimelech, thou, and all thy father's house. ” I Samuel 22:16 The king here was Saul. Ahimelech was a priest of God. The background is that Ahimelech had given food to a hungry David and his men, as well as a sword to David. Ahimelech apparently did not know that David was running from Saul. Because this priest had helped David, Saul was determined to put him and the other priests and their families to death!
What would lead Saul to such an atrocious act? Simply put, sinful self-love. Saul was obsessed with preserving his own spot on the throne. He felt threatened by David's popularity and success. Saul was envious of David and wanted him eliminated. The amazing thing is, David never purposed or intended to be anything other than a submissive servant to the king. He had no designs for a coup.
Hopefully, you have no designs to kill anyone today. But our point is to show the blindness and hardening nature of sinful self-love when it is not checked and fought against. Sometimes we don't care who we hurt, what consequences our actions may have, or even think little of showing irreverence for the things of God (Saul killing God's priests)...all because we want what we want!
This dreadful disease plagues every last one of us. But there is a remedy! God made provision for this ugly sin. Jesus died for such sins on the Cross. God forgives and cleanses us when we seek His face (I John 1:9). As we repent of this sin, let us replace it with love for God and others. May we care more about the kingdom of God than building our own, precious personal kingdoms!
