The Battle of the Somme was launched upon a 30 kilometre front, from north of the Somme river between Arras and Albert, and is chiefly remembered on account of its disastrous first day, July 1, 1916.

This was arguably the bloodiest day in British history. Britain and the Empire lost 58,000 British troops (one third of them killed) on the first day of the battle - which to this day remains a one-day record. The Ulster division suffered more than 5,000 casualties, with more than 2,000 dead, but earned four Victoria Crosses that day.

What is often forgotten is the fact that this Battle stretched for more than five months ... from 1 July - 18 November 1916, at which point it was called off.

By this stage, more than a million soldiers had been killed or wounded. This figure included German and French troops, as well as Australians, Canadians, New Zealanders and Irishmen who were fighting with the British forces.

What was Intended to be a decisive breakthrough, instead became a byword for futile and indiscriminate slaughter ... .
