In Mathew 16 Jesus announces to the disciples that hisMessiah-ship will not go according to their previously held assumptions. He would not immediately topple theRomans through the force of his might. Rather, he would defeat the works of darkness, sin and death throughweakness, sacrifice and self-denial.
Here in Matthew 16 Jesus is shown to be for us not only oursubstitute but our pacesetter. Heis our savior and our example. He saysif anyone would be his disciple they too must take up their cross, denythemselves and walk the same path.
