THE SOVEREIGNTY OF GOD AND HUMAN RESPONSIBILITY

THE SOVEREIGNTY OF GOD
AND HUMAN RESPONSIBILITY

God is, without question, absolutely sovereign; man, on the other hand is totally responsible. Man by nature is saddled with spiritual inability, in bondage to sin. The scripture affirms from the soul of his foot to the top of his head there is no soundness in him. He is spiritually dead in trespasses and sins (Isaiah 1:6 & Ephesians 2:1). But this does not deny God His right to command and hold man accountable.
God’s people are said to be “predestinated to the adoption of children according to the purpose of Him who worketh all things after the council of His own will (Ephesians 1).” That purpose will not be frustrated. He will bring those whom He gave to Christ, to salvation in Christ. But the Almighty has also a purpose to lay the burden of responsibility upon the non-elect. He commands all men everywhere to repent. You say, “But they can’t repent.” You are absolutely right, yet their inability to do so does not negate the Lord’s right to command. Men are also obligated to believe the gospel though their darkened minds are unable to perceive the logic of it and can only attribute foolishness to it (see I Corinthians 1:18). The subject presents an “antinomy.” The word is defined in the Shorter Oxford Dictionary as ‘a contradiction between two conclusions, which seem logical, reasonable or necessary.’ The particular antinomy that we are dealing with here is the apparent contradiction between God’s sovereignty and man’s responsibility, or what God does as the Sovereign Ruler and what He does as the moral governor of His creation.
There are two principles that we must not confuse: a moral and a spiritual. Men are morally commanded to repent and believe the gospel, just as they are morally commanded to cease from evil and do good according to the Law of God. Why do men not comply with the holy commands of the law? You say because they are enslaved to sin. Their bondage I do not deny, but we cannot lay it to ‘they just can’t help it,’ we must charge it to their unwillingness. Let me ask you, are men commanded, “Thou shalt not commit adultery?” Are they compelled to an affair with another man’s wife? Are they not commanded, “Thou shalt not steal?” Are they forced to steal their neighbor’s properties? Why do they do or not do these things? As free moral agents they will to, or not to do, those things.
Therefore I say men are unwilling to repent of their sins and come to Christ that they might be saved. It is for this unwillingness, and not their inability, that they shall be judged in the last day.
