“Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding." Proverbs 17:28
Despite the hopes and dreams of those who think people, in general, talk too much, this verse is not calling us to live our lives in silence. This is a continuation of the previous verse that speaks of exercising self-control in our speech. Solomon would repeat this principle in Ecclesiastes 3:7 – when he says that there is a time to keep silence, and a time to speak. It takes wisdom to know what to say and when to say it. Whether we are speaking of everyday conversation, or initiating confrontation. A man hath joy by the answer of his mouth; and a word spoken in due season, how good is it (Prov.15:23). May God bless us to use wisdom in our speech.
