“An evil man seeketh only rebellion: therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.” Proverbs 17:11
The picture that Solomon gives us is an evil man, who is eventually hunted down and destroyed by a king’s cruel messenger or servant. I suppose the overriding thought here is that rebellion will eventually lead to ruin. An evil man continues to seek evil because he thinks that he will continue to escape its consequences. This ought to be a sober warning to us all. Just as a king will not turn a blind eye to perpetual evil, neither will God. Those who think they are escaping evils consequences will one day discover they were mistaken. Maybe we should say it this way; WE who think we are escaping the consequences of evil will one day discover that we are mistaken. It is easy to confuse God’s longsuffering and mercy with “getting away” with something. We can be sure of this, the man given over to rebellion, will one day find himself in the hands of a cruel messenger. We can choose to rebel, but we cannot choose the consequences of our rebellion.
