“He is the Rock, His work is perfect: for all His ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is He.” Deuteronomy 32:4

He is the Rock. This is a frequently repeated description of God throughout the Scriptures. Obviously, God had a reason for using this description to reveal Himself to us. What does it mean? Let me present a few thoughts.

A rock is strong, solid and durable. You can sit on a strong rock, lay your whole weight upon a rock and have no worries that it will give way and crumble beneath you. God is a Rock to His people. We're not so strong, solid and durable. We need something to lean upon. Our most profound cause of weakness is sin. It's a real problem, one that destroys now and for eternity. The good news of the gospel is that Jesus is a Rock of salvation. Those who lay their whole weight upon this Rock, trusting in His work alone for salvation will never have Him crumble beneath the weight of their sins.

Another image that comes to mind with a rock is a strong boulder that is, for all practical purposes, immovable. You can push it with all your might to no avail. That rock isn't going anywhere. God is immovable. He is immovable in His purposes to get glory for Himself. That is His great program. That's good news for believers, because if God has started a work in you, He is immovable in His purpose to get glory for Himself through your life.
