Gaining the World & Losing your soul – What profit?
Mark 8:36 – 'For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?'
Your soul is your most valuable possession Your soul is immortal Your soul will spend eternity somewhere Your soul can either be SAVED or LOST
1. A SIZEABLE ACCUMULATION – ‘gain the whole world’ God’s Law: ‘Thou shalt have no other gods before Me' Jesus: ‘Seek ye first the kingdom of heaven' Paul: ‘Set you affection on things above, not on things on the earth’
What are the GAINS of the world? SPORT RICHES TECHNOLOGY ROMANCE BUSINESS RELIGION HOLIDAYS POSSESSIONS STYLE APPEARANCE
2. A SAD RUINATION – ‘and lose your own soul’ The clock of life is wound but once, And no man has the power To tell just when the hands will stop At late or early hour. To lose one's wealth is sad indeed, To lose one's health is more, To lose one's soul is such a loss That no man can restore. You can lose your soul on earth You can lose your soul in eternity
3. A SERIOUS QUESTION – ‘What shall it profit a man...?’ If you could gain the whole world, what is the benefit, if you lose your soul?
4. A SPLENDID REDEMPTION Psalmist: ‘The redemption of their soul is precious.’
