Matthew 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. The world worries, frets, lies, cheats, steals, and kills to get their worldly goods which they need and they don't need. This does not identify true believers. Yes, we may fail, but not habitually as a child of God. Christ encourages His people to place their hope and trust in God in our times of need.
There are so many things vying for our attention, and all too often we invite the cacophony of advertisements, entertainments, etc...to distract us from seeking first the Kingdom of God. It is no wonder we worry and fret over the state of affairs around the world and those in our own personal worlds.
This verse remedies the hurried, frantic, and worrisome state of so many in our "advanced civilization". Jesus counsels us to set our priorities towards God our Creator Who knows us much better than ourselves, as reason would tell us. Christ, God the Son, is to have the preminence (Colossians 1:18 And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.). To put anything or anyone in front of God is idolatry.
What is it to seek first God's kingdom? The context is the Sermon on the Mount where Jesus addresses the characteristics of those who are citizens of His Kingdom. The principles laid out in the Sermon on the Mount do not give directives on how to be part of God's Kingdom, but simply describe the attributes of those who are part of God's Kingdom.
But, if you are without Christ and still in your sins, by nature a child of wrath, and, as it were, headed for hell, you must flee to Christ. This demands that you turn away from your sins and turn to the Christ, the Messiah, the One and Only Saviour Jesus Christ the Lord. He alone took the sins of His people (those who repent and believe) to pay the penalty of sin for all those who trust and believe on Him for their salvation from their sins. He did this by voluntarily taking the eternal wrath of God on the cross for His people and therefore, justice is satisfied. He was then, buried, and rose again victorious over death, hell, and the grave, for His children that they may be justified and delivered from their sins. Only after receiving Christ can a person enjoy the promise in this verse in Matthew 6:33.
Once someone has come into God's Kingdom they immediately have the characteristics of the citizens of God's Kingdom. They are citizens of a Kingdom where God manifestly rules and reigns. If a saved person struggles with worry it is a mark that they need to take to Christ's counsel in Matthew 6:33. As God's people, we must seek after the King of the Kingdom, and all the things that pertain to His Kingdom, His Laws, His Decrees, His Word, His churches, and His children.
It is elaborated upon that we should seek...His righteousness, not ours, not the world's standard of "righteousness". We cannot find comfort when we are disobedient towards our King, chastisement will come to His children, and that is defined as grievous, not joyous in Hebrews 12.
If you do these things, all that you need shall be added unto you. Moreover, let us never forget that the eternal life we need has been provided by Christ for us who believe, and that is the greatest need that we have.
