“An ungodly man diggeth up evil: and in his lips there is as a burning fire.” Proverbs 16:27

This passage contains a very relevant thought for our age, one that will likely be a rebuke to all of us. The topic is the fascination with evil. The media landscape is filled with such evil – the latest bizarre crime, the philandering of celebrities, zombies, death, kidnappings, etc. It is too simplistic to blame this trend on some unseen agenda of people in position of power. While that agenda likely is true, the reality is that evil gets ratings. The same trend is true in person to person interaction. What is more likely to come from your lips? A description of your meditations in God’s word this morning, or the tale of the neighbor you saw fighting with his wife? Solomon’s rebuke is plain. The digging up of evil is ungodly. Yes, evil exists. But we are warned to flee from evil. Fleeing from evil involves more than just not becoming involved in evil. It also includes avoiding it in our thoughts and tongues. In an ungodly age, our great need is godliness. Godliness is found in the heart that hungers and thirsts for righteousness. Evil saddens this person. He sees no need to speak of it or dwell upon it. He looks for a better city where righteousness, peace, and joy reign. Therefore, he sets his affection on things above, not on things on the earth. Let’s repent together today.
