A Thought From the Word

“This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance.” II Peter 3:1

First, note the touching setting. This letter comes from Peter's heart of love for God and the people of God. From chapter 1, we know that Peter recognized his time on earth was short. Therefore, the things the Spirit had impressed upon his heart and mind were with a sense of urgency. That should really make our ears perk up when we read it. It should also exhort us to follow Peter's example of ministering from pure motives of love for God and His people.

Second, be encouraged today that if you are in Christ, you have a pure mind. Sometimes we wonder whether or not that is true. Being discouraged and disgusted with our sinful flaws and foolish stumbles is common. But, believer, God has given you a new, holy nature! Therefore, you can seek God, fight your sin and throw yourself on God's mercies.

Lastly, we need these pure minds to be stirred up. That literally means to be awakened or aroused from sleep. Probably more than you or I realize, we need to be engaged with God's word. Here is a good prayer for Sunday morning or other time you will take in God's word, “Lord, I don't want to be sleepy in my soul. Stir me up to love and faith today through your Word. Amen!”
