“While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought into bondage.” II Peter 2:19
Peter was warning his readers here of false teachers who would attract a crowd. The message of these teachers: Liberty; Freedom! Freedom is a precious thing if it is true liberty. Many in the world seek liberty, but they seek it outside of God. Freedom from God’s will for our lives, judgment to come, and consequences for sin.
Some think when they shake the “shackles” of God’s word away, they will then delight in freedom. And they do find great pleasure…for a while! Peter says here this supposed freedom actually leads to slavery. Mark this, sin promises liberty but instead brings bondage.
A relationship with God is true liberty. Obeying God’s word leads one to genuine liberty. His commands are never intended to damage a soul, but to lead one to freedom of the soul. Jesus Himself said, “the truth shall make you free.” As Peter says, whoever overcomes you will rule you. May you and I be overcome by the power, grace and love of Christ, and experience true liberty.
