Regeneration is an irresistible act of God’s grace: no more resistance can be made to it than there could be in the first matter to its creation; or in a dead man to his resurrection; or in an infant to its generation. Whatever aversion, contrariety, or opposition there may be to it, in the corrupt nature of man, it is all speedily and easily overcome by the power of divine grace, when the stony heart is taken away, and a heart of flesh is given. –John Gill
As Christ’s resurrection was a declaration of His being the Son of God, so regeneration is an evidence of interest in his adoption of children. Likewise as the resurrection of Christ was by the almighty power of God, so is the regeneration and quickening of a dead sinner. And as Christ’s resurrection was the first step to His glorification, so is regeneration, to seeing and entering into the kingdom of God. –John Gill
"STAND STILL" "And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD which He will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever" (Exodus 14:13). By the Lord’s guidance and command, Israel encamped at the Red Sea. With the water before them, mountains on either side and the Egyptian army ready to pounce upon them, they had no ability to save themselves. The vast sea could not be crossed, the rugged mountains could not be climbed, and the sizable army of the enemy could not be withstood. The Israelites were hemmed in, and to the natural mind there was no possibility of escape. It was then that they were told to "stand still and see the salvation of the LORD." Their deliverance had to come from the Lord.
Do you not see a picture of the salvation of sinners? What contribution could we make toward the eternal deliverance of our souls? Could we defeat that great Pharaoh (Satan) and his armies which pursued us to destroy us? Could we remove the mountain of iniquities that stood against us? Moreover, could we satisfy the law of God that justly rose up to accuse us of rebellion against the Lord and demanded death for our numerous transgressions? Like Israel, if we are to be rescued, deliverance must come from above. As the Lord chose Israel over all other nations, redeemed her from Egyptian bondage and rescued her from what would have been certain defeat, so He has saved His people from our sins. He chose us unto salvation in Christ before the world was made. By His cross-death the Savior crushed the head of Satan, redeemed us by His blood, paid the ransom price demanded by the justice of God, put away our sins, and the Father accepted us because of the Savior’s work of reconciliation. Our Mediator has gone back to heaven, and upon the basis of His life laid down, the Holy Spirit, using the gospel, regenerates those for whom the Lord Jesus died. He gives us faith to believe the gospel. Chosen, redeemed and regenerated sinners trust Christ, and the Word says we have everlasting life. "Stand still and see the salvation of the LORD." There is no possibility that both God and sinners can be at work in salvation when it is impossible for us to save ourselves, and the Lord alone is able to accomplish the work. –Pastor Jim Byrd
