“And we desire that every one of you do show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope unto the end: that ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises. ” Hebrews 6:11,12
The writer of Hebrews doesn’t let anyone off the hook, but says, “every one of you”! The call is to diligence in following God. This is what we might call the “nitty-gritty” of everyday Christianity. It is obedience and faithfulness to God when the spotlight of a crowd isn’t on and the excitement is not present. It is consistency in the disciplines of the reading and study of Scripture and prayer. It is the endurance of doing hard things such as sacrificing to serve others. It is the daily, strenuous effort to put off sin and put on Christ-likeness.
Instead of being a slothful Christian, he exhorts us to faith and patience (endurance). This diligence is not a feverish effort to do enough so that we may score enough points with God by the end of the day. No, it is from faith. That is, it is from a heart that has peace with God because of Jesus Christ. It looks to God’s sufficiency to fuel this life of diligence. This faith produces love for God which motivates this endurance. Working hard for God…consistency…discipline…by faith!
