A Thought From the Word

For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand.”

II Timothy 4:6

Paul’s second letter to Timothy is believed to have been the last letter he wrote. He wrote from a depressing Roman prison, and this verse suggests that he had a sense of his impending execution.

How did Paul see his death? As a great tragedy or an indication that he had somehow failed? No! Paul said he was ready to be ‘offered’. This word refers back to the Old Testament drink offering. Paul was saying that he saw his approaching death as an offering poured out to honor and glory of his Savior. Now, that is the way to die!

How do you see your death, or first, how do you see your life? As believers, the sacrifice of Jesus Christ for our sins should powerfully impact how we view every day. Every day of life and eventually our death should be seen as an offering presented to our Savior. That’s the best way to live and die.
