“He that oppresseth the poor reproacheth His Maker: but he that honoreth him hath mercy on the poor.” Proverbs 14:31

There are two important truths to be learned from this passage. First, there is no separation between the sacred and the common. We tend to create this false separation in our minds. For example, we think of Sunday worship as belonging to God while we think of the weekend as belonging to us. But, this is simply not the case. All of our actions are reflections of worship. In this particular passage, God makes this point while reflecting on how we treat the needy. Those who oppress are not just furthering the suffering of the individual; they are blaspheming God, the Maker of all mankind.
