“He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding: but he that is hasty of spirit exaltethfolly.” Proverbs 14:29
It is no surprise to hear that God condemns rash anger. We have all witnessed the embarrassing and destructive antics of angry people. Yet, in the moment of provocation, anger is not easily subdued. Helpfully, Solomon here gives not just the command – “Don’t act in wrath” but also provides the reason anger should be subdued. It is because self-control reveals great understanding. Perhaps it will be helpful to consider the understanding that should limit wrath:
My anger may not be justified. I am fallible and may not fully understand the situation. If I am wrong, my outburst will be great sin.
The person I am angry with is created in the image of God. I cannot bless God and curse men made in His image simultaneously.
God can extract justice much better than I.
This is an opportunity to honor Christ. According to Ephesians 4, He is honored when I strive harder for unity than I do for my own interests. Striving for unity means that I will have to bear much wrong with grace and kindness.
In light of eternity, this is a small thing.
God is using this suffering to refine me.
Jesus was wronged; yet, He did not threaten. I want to follow His example.
