A Thought From the Word

Wealth maketh many friends; but the poor is separated from his neighbor.” Proverbs 19:4

The “friendship” here spoken of is obviously a flimsy, non-genuine arrangement. The “friends” seek out the wealthy person because of his wealth, because he has something they want. What kind of friend are you and who are those that you like to reach out to?

The danger here is being kind and gracious to people for purely self-serving purposes. Perhaps, you show attention to someone because they are extra-attractive on the outside, because they seem to be in the “cool” crowd, or because you think having them as your friend will make you look better to others.

While we should show genuine love to all—rich, poor, attractive, average, socially awkward and type A personalities—the motive for our kindness should be because we genuinely want to bless another human being. That is love. Jesus is called the friend of sinners! He reached out to the socially unattractive even when it brought heavy criticism. He befriended sinners not because they could somehow improve His life, but because of His deep, holy love that would save and cleanse their hearts and lives. May we be more like our great Friend!
