“He that speaketh truth sheweth forth righteousness: but a false witness deceit.” Proverbs 12:17

Few are shy about voicing their thoughts on their favorite restaurant, sports team, or other topic of interest. There is no perceived danger because even if there is disagreement, the disagreement is not personal. When it comes to important issues of life-sin, life decisions, we tend to clam up. In fact, we often nod our heads in agreement even while our minds are screaming a far different story. Our refusal to speak the truth is not just an effort to get along; actually, it is deceit. It is not righteous, and it does not promote righteousness. How can we overcome this very human sin?

1. By loving others more than we love ourselves. A refusal to speak the truth reveals self-love, the need to protect self from unpleasant reactions, not love for the other person. It does not seek the good of others.
2. By understanding the impact of truth. The truth sets free. The truth sanctifies. And yes, often the truth hurts. But the pain of truth produces righteousness, while the sweet sound of deceit produces far greater pain. Never sacrifice truth for the temporary ease of mind.
3. By cultivating the fear of God. Ultimately, we answer to God. We answer to God for our words, for our advice, and for the times we refuse to use words.
