Everyday Wisdom | Proverbs 12:15

“The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise.”
Proverbs 12:15

Christians retain the capacity to act as fools. By grace, we have been given the divine nature of Christ, but we continue to retain the old nature that is inherently sinful. Thus, we are exhorted to put off the old man, put away foolish thinking, and put on the new man, or put on Christ-like thinking. This passage from Proverbs highlights an essential area in which the “put off, put on” principle needs to be an active part of our daily activity. We rarely, if ever, think that our opinions, decisions, and ideas about life are wrong. God says this is foolish. How then do we break away from this tendency toward foolishness?

  1. Listen carefully and with an open mind to others, particularly those in direct authority (pastors, parents)
  2. When you are tempted to speak on an issue, pause and think about it before speaking.
  3. Pray specifically for the humility to recognize that you are not as smart or right as you think you are.
  4. Actively seek counsel. Select 2 or 3 wise people that you consistently seek advice from regarding decisions, ideas, and temptations.
  5. Read the Bible daily. Before and while reading, ask God to reveal His wisdom to you as you read.
