"The wicked is snared by the transgression of his lips: but the just shall come out of trouble." Proverbs 12:13
Have you ever watched an advertisement for some miracle product and chuckled as the rapidly read list of side effects overwhelmed the splashy ad? You can be sure that product is not worthy of your investment because there is near certainty that you cannot enjoy the benefit without also suffering the side effect. Sinful living is like one of those products. Whatever perceived benefit proffered will always bring the undesired suffering. A side effect that always accompanies sinful pursuits is the constant need to protect self from potential trouble. This is an exhausting and eventually unsuccessful endeavor. The philanderer has to act carefully to insure his spouse is kept in the dark. The drunkard has to guard their smell and speech to convince others that nothing is out of place. The lazy employee has to begin typing furiously when the boss walks into the room. In sinful living, potential danger is always lurking around the corner. There is never a moment of true rest. Inevitably, it is the sinner himself that ends up letting the cat out of the bag. The wicked is snared by his own lips, not by the lips of his enemy. It is foolhardy to think that we can manage wickedness and remain unscathed. In contrast, the righteous live restfully, live simply, because there is no self-inflicted potential danger lurking around the corner. How worry free is your life?
