"He that tilleth his land shall have plenty of bread; But he that followeth after vain persons is void of understanding." Proverbs 12:11
Here again, Solomon returns to the subject of work. He contrasts those who are willing to work hard and sacrifice for their sustenance, with those who essentially chase worthless pursuits. You will notice if you have a KJV Bible, the word “persons” is in italics. This means that the word is not translated from the Hebrew, but added by the translators for assistance in understanding the text. Many commentators put the word “things” in place of “persons”. The essential meaning of this text is that those who do what they want to do rather than what they need to do are foolish. When it comes to providing for ourselves and our families, you might be surprised to find out that God does not have a “follow your dreams” attitude. Many people live with the attitude that if they can’t do what they want to do, they will just hold out until something they like comes along. This is called being lazy, and God calls it foolish. We were created by God to work, and therefore work is good. May we glorify God in our attitude and actions in this area of life.
