"Knowing The Truth" with Pastor Kevin Boling is a live, call-in radio program providing Doctrinal Dialog, Cultural Commentary and Insightful Interviews with some of today's foremost Christian authors and leaders. Earlier this year, Christian Post ran a three-part series about “the debate on the Bible and homosexuality”. They launched the series with an interview with Matthew Vines, a 22 year old, Harvard University Student, who professes to be both Gay and Christian.
On his Facebook page Vines states that he is “an advocate for the acceptance of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people within Christian communities and in society at large.”
Vines, who is currently on a leave of absence from the University, launched an hour-long YouTube presentation where he challenges the interpretation of six passages of Scripture that are commonly used to condemn homosexuality.
Vines basic argument in the video is that Loving, same-sex relationships are not addressed in the Bible, and therefore certainly not condemned. Rather, Vines contends that the Bible only condemns the lustful, casual homosexual behavior. And with that as his basic premise Vines makes the audacious claim “This video dismantles every Bible-based argument against homosexuality”.
Vines has also launched an organization called “The Reformation Project”. The website for his organization says that it is a “Bible-based, Christian non-profit organization that seeks to reform church teaching on sexual orientation and gender identity.”
The vision statement of the organization states its goal is to “host our first leadership conference for 50 straight, gay, bisexual, and transgender Christians who are committed to reform” and send them “back to their communities and make lasting changes to beliefs and interpretations that marginalize LGBT people”
By publicly promoting the agenda of the so called “Gay Christian Movement”, Vines has given the church a great advantage in exposing and opposing this sinful strategy.
First, by helping the church to unequivocally state that such a pernicious attack is currently in progress. The typical objection to this type of claim are that the threat is overstated. Vines has removed that objection for us. We can now, go to the website; we can point to the video as clear evidence of a coordinated attack against the church and her doctrines.
Second, by starting the offensive against the church with an attempt to rewrite the historical interpretation of the passages of Scripture dealing with Homosexuality, Vines has unwittingly reminded the church that the strength of the argument lies in the teachings of God’s Word. Therefore the best way to oppose this movement is to clearly understand and articulate those passages and in that way prove why, erroneous conclusions like Vines, are inconsistent with Biblical Christianity.
To help us do that, my guest today is Dr. Evan Lenow, Assistant Professor of Ethics, Associate Director of the Richard Land Center for Cultural Engagement, and Chair of the Ethics Department at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, TX.
Dr. Lenow was quoted in a second article in the CP series and has since written his own four-part response to Matthew Vines, refuting his interpretation of Scripture.
